Resilience, Resolution and Froyo

Joplin, MO | July 2013

Resilience is defined in Webster’s dictionary as the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.

Orange Leaf Headquarters (HQ) awarded grants of up to $2,500 to 14 stores March of this year, as part of our first annual Community Service Initiative. Stores were able to apply for grants to help support their local partnerships and community service events.

Our inspiring store in Joplin, Mo. Used part of their $2,500 award to support a partnership with Art Feeds, a Joplin-based organization that strives to cultivate an environment where students are empowered to express themselves, thereby mobilizing creative healing. Art Feeds helps students explore, express and integrate emotional expression through visual, performing and creative arts.

Creative healing was activated May 22, 2013, exactly one year after a massive EF5 multiple-vortex tornado destroyed a third of Joplin. Orange Leaf Joplin joined Art Feeds to encourage kids express themselves through art to remind themselves of the courage and the resiliency they have displayed since the destruction.

The local store donated $400 to Art Feeds to help purchase supplies for an event where children decorated bouncy balls and streamers as a sign of resilience, resolution and realization.

Employees of the store were also present at the event to help the children with their art projects and to provide them with mouth-watering froyo as they worked hard designing their bouncy balls and streamers.

The Orange Leaf Joplin team gave out approximately 630 cups of froyo at the event, which was also covered by part of their $2,500 award. The store has a remainder of $500 which will be put towards a future event with Art Feeds.

“We were fortunate that last year’s tornado did not destroy our store,” Lanette Smith, Manager of Orange Joplin said. “The least we can do is to show the people of Joplin that we are committed to this community and will do everything in our power to support the rebuilding process.”

Smith also said that working with Art Feeds was an incredible experience.

“As a brand that focuses on giving back to our local communities, partnering with Art Feeds to work the children of this town was incredible,” said Smith. “It was a great feeling to be able to remind our children of how resilient this town has been since the tragedy.”

The Joplin store has future plans to host other events with Art Feeds and to play a major part in the rebuilding process taking place in the town.
